Curriculum Guidance

Goals and Objectives

Like the saying goes... "The Ends Justify the Means" before beginning, you must know where you are headed.  Goals give you direction.  They should be global and not too specific.  You should ask yourself, "Where do we see ourselves in 3-5 years?" for each area.

Goal Examples:

  1. Students will become proficient in math and language arts California Content Standards.
  2. Students will become educated on the safest practices for using the internet and becoming safety-conscious digital citizens.

Objectives Defined:

Objectives contribute to the fulfillment of goals

They must be:

  • Measurable
  • Defined
  • Operational
  • Simple in steps
  • Specific
  • Manageable

Think of who you are targeting: students, staff, administration, parents.

What will they do?

How long will they have to do it in?

How will it be measured?

First Section of Objective:

Who are you targeting?

  • Pleasant Valley students will...
  • Indianola certificated staff will...
  • Roosevelt parents will...

Second Section of Objective:

What will they do? (Make sure it supports your goal.  Think measurable.)

  • Pleasant Valley students will...be 75% proficient in internet safety...
  • Indianola certificated staff will...be 75% proficient in using EduSoft to manage student data...
  • Roosevelt parents will...demonstrate 50% use of the district/school website and resources...

Third Section of Objective:

By when?  (Think towards the end o the tech plan.)

  • Pleasant Valley students will...be 75% proficient in internet safety...by June 2012,...
  • Indianola certificated staff will...be 75% proficient in using EduSoft to manage student data...by June 2012,..
  • Roosevelt parents will...demonstrate 50% use of the district/school website and resources...by June 2012,...

Fourth Section of Objective:

How will you measure growth?

Make sure that you use concrete measures like: EdTechProfile, CSTs, Benchmarks, parent surveys, unit tests etc.

Do not use things such as: anecdotal notes, observations, sign in sheets, etc.

If it is not measurable, it will be sent back for revision.

  • Pleasant Valley students will...be 75% proficient in internet safety...by June 2012,...as measured by the CyberSMART curriculum student survey.
  • Indianola certificated staff will...be 75% proficient in using EduSoft to manage student data...by June 2012,..as measured by the end of the year site survey.
  • Roosevelt parents will...demonstrate 50% use of the district/school website and resources...by June 2012,...as measured by the number of hits generated from our website analytics program.

Benchmarks Defined:

Measures of progress toward a goal, taken at intervals prior to the program's completion or the anticipated attainment of the final goal.  It is the measurement or standard that serves as a point of reference by which process performance is measured.

Use the same frame as the Objectives:

_________________will be ______% proficient on ___________________by ___________as measured by ______________.

Break it down into yearly manageable chunks.

Year 1 Benchmark

Pleasant Valley students will be 50% proficient on internet safety by June 2010as measured by the CyberSMART curriculum student survey.

Year 2 Benchmark

Pleasant Valley students will be 60% proficient on internet safety by June 2011as measured by the CyberSMART curriculum student survey.

Year 3 Benchmark

Pleasant Valley students will be 75% proficient on internet safety by June 2012as measured by the CyberSMART curriculum student survey.

Implementation:

This is where the idea is moved from concept to reality.  The implementation includes activities that will be used to meet your yearly benchmarks.  It answers these questions:

  • What are the activities that will help to reach the yearly benchmarks?
  • What is my timeline to conduct the activities?
  • Who will be responsible for carrying out the activities?
  • How will I evaluate and monitor the progress towards the benchmarks?
  • What kind of data will I collect to demonstrate this growth?

Activities:

All activities need to support your objective and goals.

Remember to have activities that reflect student learning not just teachers teaching.

Teachers will teach 12 lessons on cyber safety is too vague.  It should say...

All k-12 students will be taught a minimum of 12 lessons on internet safety per year using the CyberSMART curriculum.

Activities can be:

  • Student products/projects
  • Programs such as AR, CyberSMART, Reading Counts
  • 10 minute focus sessions
  • Field trips
  • Guest speaker (Person in charge of cyber crime division speaking on internet predators and how to safe guard)
  • Day to day things taking place in classroom to fulfill benchmarks objectives and goals.

Example:

Goal:

Overall plan.

Ex. Students will become educated on the safest practices for using the internet and becoming safety-conscious digital citizens.

Objective:

This should match your year 3 benchmark

Ex. Students will be 75% proficient in internet safety by June 2012, as measured by the CyberSMART student survey.

Year 1 Benchmark:

__________ will be ____% proficient on _____________by ______ as measured by ___________

(students, staff, administration, parents) will be ____% proficient on (math, LA, internet safety, etc.) by (date) as measured by (CST, district benchmark, EdTech profile survey)

Year 2 Benchmark:  Same as benchmark year 1 but % should increase and date should change.

Year 3 Benchmark: Same as benchmark year 2 but % should increase and date should change. (This should match the percentage used in your Objective).
